World's Largest Offshore Wind Turbine Unveiled in Japan

A wind turbine farm for an experimental offshore power generation project was unveiled Monday at Fukushima Prefecture in Japan.

With7,000 kilowatts of installed capacity, the turbine will bethe largest offshore wind power generation in the world, according to Japanese media.

The wind farm project was commissioned by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in the fiscal year 2011, andaims to establish a business model to kick-start domestic wind turbine exports.

A 2,000-kilowatt wind turbine has already started operatingoff Fukushima. A third turbine with an output capacity of 5,000 kilowatts will be installed in2015.

Theturbine, some 220 meters highand located approx.20 kilometers' distancefrom Fukushima,will start operating in September.Electricity produced by the wind farmwill be transmitted to land via submarine cables.

After the Fukushima disasterin 2011,some nuclear stations in Japan were closed. Following the disaster andin order to meetgrowing electricity demandin the country, Japan turned toliquefied natural gas, the usage of which hasreached record levels.
