A U.K.offshore wind farm designed to power1.8 million homes with 2.4 gigawatts of capacity received planning consent for its construction, the Department of Energy & Climate Change announced Wednesday.
The Dogger Bank Teesside A and B offshore wind project,to be located on the north east coast of theU.K.,will includea total of400 wind turbines in both section A and B, each generating a capacity of1.2 gigawatts.
The offshore wind farmhas the potential to generate around 8 terawatt hours of green power every year.
Each 1.2 gigawattsection is estimated toreduce carbon emissions by almost two million tonnes a year.
Four leading international energy companies Scottish SSE, German RWE and Norwegian Statkraft and Statoil formed a consortium, Forewind,through which they will undertake the development of the project.
Pre-construction, construction and operation of the farm is planned to start later on in the year.
