Turkey's Wind Energy Market No Longer in Infancy: Siemens

Turkey's wind energy market is no longer in its infancy but has moved to itsthird phase wheregrowth occurs,Siemens Technical Sales Manager of Wind Energy in Turkeysaid at the sixth Renewables Energy Forumin Istanbul Tuesday.

Investors from the foreign and domestic wind market continue toinvestin Turkey's wind development, according to the technical sales manager,Bilgehan Yasacan.

"Turkey aims to have 20 gigawattsof wind power as a renewable energy target for 2023," he said, and added that, among all energy resources, wind plays a significant role.

By 2023, the countryplansto have 34 gigawatts of hydropower, 20 gigawatts of wind capacity, a minimum of 5,000 megawatts of solar capacity anda minimum of 1,000 megawattsof electricity from biomass and geothermal sources.

Commenting on the feed-in tariff, he said that there is a gap between the market price and the feed-in tariff (FIT).The FIT is increasing due to the rate ofthe U.S. dollar against theTurkish lira whilethemarket price is basedon therelatively highelectricitysupplyand low demand.

He added that Turkey hasvery good conditions forwind power and the feed-in tariff mechanism, which is guaranteed by the government, is an incentive for renewable investors.

He also confirmed thatTurkey has been afocus market for Siemens wherethe company has avery strong team and market presence.

The one day forum was organized by EEL events, aU.K.-based organizationfocusing on investments in emerging markets. The forum aims todevelop a common approach to renewable energy regulation. It also will allow for discussionson Turkey'srenewable energy market,specifically in wind and solar energy,with representatives from around the world.
