Turkey Should Expand Oil, Gas Search for Supply Security

Turkey may have oil and gas resources in the Black Seato supportits supplysecurity, an energy expertsaid Wednesday.

"I don't agree with the argument that Turkey does not have any oil and gas resources," saidNecdet Pamir, the chairman of the committee on energy policies at Turkey'sChamber of Petroleum Engineers. He added that he believesthere are reserves in Turkey, especially in the Black Sea.

Speaking at the14th Turkish International Oil and Gas Conferenceat theSheratonHotel and Convention CenterinAnkara,Pamir stressed that thereare not enough exploration activities for oil and gas in the country.

Turkey'sMinistry of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz announced on Dec. 11 thatTurkey is planning to conduct drilling activities foroil and natural gas resourcesin the western Black Seaon Turkey'snorthwestern region,with energy giantRoyal Dutch Shell.

The energy minister reiterated on Dec. 30 that Turkey will start drilling in the Black Sea in cooperation withShell in the first months of 2015.

"Turkey wants to ensure its supply security," saidAmbassador Hakki Emre Yunt, the director general for Multilateral Economic Affairs, Energy and Environment at Turkey'sMinistry of Foreign Affairs.

"At the same time, it wants toprovide oil and gas to Europe,andtransfer natural gas from Iraq to European markets," he said at the conference.

Yunt emphasizedthe global energy map is being transformed withnew actors and technologies. He saidenergy is a priority for the international community and its securitycomes high on the international agenda.

"Despite the complex situationsurrounding the eastern Mediterranean region,Turkey is a key player by standing at the crossroads of major producers and consumers as a reliable transit country, and it is becomingan energy hub," he explained.
