Turkey is a country considered to be virtually untouched in terms of oil exploration, saidSelami Incedalci, general manager of Turkey’s General Directorate of Petroleum Affairson Wednesday.
During his speech at the 14th Turkish International Oil and Gas Conference in Ankara,IncedalcisaidIn Turkey,less than 5,000 explorationrigs have been openedand thecountry'soil and gas exploration needs to speed up.
"Turkey should receive moreglobal investments for oil exploration,” Incedalcisaid and added"Turkey'spossible shale oil areas are explored through various techniquesand especiallySoutheastern and Thrace region is believed to be rich in this resource."
During the event Umit Akin, thefounder and managing partner of AkinLaw Office said that Turkey's energy sector used to beheavily regulated by the state, strict governmental rules eased for receiving more investments recently.
Within the scope of the exploration activities, Turkey drilled around 4,600wells since 1934. Seventypercent of the wells were located in southeastern Turkey, 22 percent were in the Thrace region and 8 percent were in other locations.
Following the searches, Turkey discovered 130 crude oil fields and 56 natural gas fields. Crude oil is produced from nearly1,300wells and natural gas is produced from nearly 250 wells.
During 2014, twenty-ninedomestic and 17 foreign petroleum companies worked onnatural gas and crude oil exploration in Turkey.
