Turkey: Akdeniz Electricity Distribution to Invest 790 Mln Lira

Turkey's Akdeniz Electricity Distribution Company will invest 790 million Turkish liras between 2016 and 2020 in the electricity sector, general manager of the company said on Thursday.

All 21 electricity distribution companies in Turkey plan to invest a total of 18.4 billion lira during 2016-2020 period for electricity distribution.

The investment portion of the companies vary according to the needs of their regions where they distribute electricity.

Akdeniz will allocate 639 million liras of their total investment towards improving the grid and reduce malfunction and electricity cuts, General Manager Murat Yigit told Anadolu Agency.

In the next step, the company aims to carry out investments towards instantly informing the consumer of any disruptions and solving the problems in a short amount of time, Yigit said.

Malfunctions in the region decreased from 75 thousand in 2013 to 45 thousand in 2015, according to data.

The company distributes electricity to over 1.6 million customers.

Between 2011 and 2014, the company invested 462 million liras in the electricity sector, he said.

The company employs Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA), a system for remote monitoring and control, in order to better serve customers.

"There are 136 centers linked to the SCADA system and by the mid-year it will rise to 162," Yigit said and added that Akdeniz targets increasing the number to over 300 by the end of 2020.

Over 30 thousand customers benefit from their meter being read from afar thanks to the relevant technology used by Akdeniz, said Yigit.

He added that the company aims to increase the number to over 60 thousand by 2020.

With planned investments, 80 percent of current problems in electricity distribution sector will be solved in the next two to three years, he argued.
