On June 24 the annual Mare Forum gathering, the third in the current series, was organized in the luxurious Aphrodite Hills Intercontinental resort, near Paphos, in the Republic of Cyprus. Hosts were the Holland based Mare Forum organisation bringing together more than 140 senior executives from the global maritime transportation and energy spheres. This one day high level conference focused on the ongoing developments in oil and gas exploration, production exploitation, investments and finance, distribution and transportation from the Eastern Mediterranean sea to Europe and the World.

The main conference topics covered such themes as global and regional geopolitics, the world economy and Cyprus’s financial and economic outlook, demand and supply of oil and gas, perspectives on shale gas business, energy alternatives, and energy prices. Several presentations and interventions were made by well known authorities of the oil and gas sector including Dr.Solon Kassinis, of Cyprus based Kasinis international consulting,John Tomich from Noble Energy ,Professor Anthony Foscolos and Dr.Charles Ellinas. The subjects covered included exploration and production, Mediterranean Ultra Deep,Water Oil and Gas-geopolitical challenges and exploration and production, pipelines vs. shipping, investment possibilities in the region, risks and rewards, technical challenges for offshore and onshore liquefaction gas terminals, and more.

The maritime transportation of energy covering ships, oil, IPG-LNG-CNG market outlook, sustainability, finance and investments, prevention,risks, new ships, new fuels, and innovations was the other main thematic area of the conference with speakers and panelists some of Greece’s heavyweights including Philip Embiricos, George Tsavliris and Dimitris Lyras. Richard Greiner of London based Moore Stephens, Apostollos Poulovasillis from Lloyd’s Register and Carlos Guerrera of Burreau Veritas were also among the senior shipping echelon who participated with presentations and in the lively panel discussions.

Representing IENE in this highly motivating top level regional meeting was the Institute’s executive director Mr.Costis Stambolis, who participated in the proceedings as a panelist, having accepted an invitation by Mare Forum’s president Mr. Jannis Kostoulas.
