The impact of driverless cars on high-tech and low-tech jobs, vehicle
usage, toll roads, life changing independence and even reducing car
accidents could be significant. Their ultimate arrival appears likely,
as they are part of an ongoing trend of increasing automobile
automation.
The leap from automation being an additional feature
monitored by a licensed driver to completely replacing the driver will
be huge. In our view, it is more likely a case of ‘when’, and not ‘if‘
you will see this technology in cars. However there are a number of key
issues regarding safety, regulation and insurance that won’t be
resolved overnight.
While certainly nowhere near as momentous as the
invention and widespread adoption of the auto itself, the advent of
self-driving cars would likely impact society on many levels. But it’s
going to be several years before the road ahead has a clear view.
