Russia and Sudan signed an agreement to develop a nuclear power plant (NPP) construction project in Sudanese territory, Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom announced on Friday.
According to the statement, Sudan’s Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity, Musa Omer Abu Elgasim and Rosatom’s company Rusatom Overseas’ head of business development, Dmitry Bazhenov, signed the agreement.
As part of the feasibility study of the NPP construction project, the site will be selected and the key parameters for the project will be identified, including technology, capacity, configuration, deadlines and project stages, as well as a financial scheme, the statement read.
"Nuclear technology development will allow Sudan to cope with problem of energy security in the Republic. This is a large-scale project that has a strategic meaning and determines the character of relations between our countries for a long period,” Bazhenov was quoted as saying.
Previously, during the visit of Omar al-Bashir, the president of Sudan, to Russia, the governments signed an agreement on "cooperation in the peaceful uses of atomic energy” in Sochi on Nov. 24.
