Russia, Egypt to Sign Second Agreement for Nuke Plant

Monday, 10 August 2015

Russia and Egypt plan to sign a second agreement for the construction of a nuclear power plant, which will be constructed in the coming months, Russian PM said on Thursday.

According to Russian news agency Sputnik, Dmitry Medvedev said that Russian and Egyptian companies are already preparing the contracts for the nuclear construction.

"Technical specifications and the number of nuclear power units, as well as the key commercial terms, have been agreed upon. They will be included in a new intergovernmental agreement, which is almost ready for signing," Medvedev said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi said in February  the two countries had signed a memorandum of understanding to build a nuclear reactor for power generation in Egypt's northwestern Al-Dabaa region. The power plant is expected to have a capacity of 1,000 megawatts.

China, France and the U.S already expressed their interest in the project apart from Russia.

Egypt and Russia appear to have drawn closer since President Mohamed Morsi – Egypt's first freely elected leader – was ousted by the army in mid-2013.
