SN Nuclearelectrica SA informs that Units 1 and 2 of CNE Cernavoda are
working properly and in conditions of nuclear safety, and are not
affected by the lowering of the Danube River levels reported by the
National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA).
According
to the forecast INHGA passed for the period until the end of September
2015, the Danube levels will not prevent CNE Cernavoda to operate in
optimal conditions, so power production will not be affected because of
it.
Plant safety cannot be jeopardized in cases of extremely low
levels of the Danube. In the hypothetical situation in which the Danube
would reach such levels, according to plant procedures, orderly shut
down of the two units will be applied, according to pre-set levels for
each unit, so that there is enough cooling water flow to the reactors to
maintain a safe state. In the extreme case of one or both units
stopping, there is enough water in the intake basin to ensure the
cooling of reactors by using special pumps.
Also for such extreme
situations, CNE Cernavoda has provided assurance measures for cooling
the reactors using a water pumping system from two deep wells.
