Renewables to Increase Against Coal by 2040: IEA

Wind energy will be the leader of renewable power against coal due to climate concerns, says IEA official

Wind energy will be the leader of renewable poweragainst coal duetoclimate concerns, anInternational Energy Agency official said Tuesday.

Renewables share will be more than 45 percent in the world by 2040 against coal power taking into account climate change concerns, according toHead of Renewable Energy Divisionof International Energy AgencyPaolo Frankl.

By2040, wind power will see a significant level of developmentamong all renewable sources, Franklsaidduring the plenarysession speech at the firstIntercontinental Wind Power Congress in Istanbul.

He explained this development inrecent years has increased gradually particularly in countries which havestarted to mix their energy sources.

"Electricity generation from natural gas and wind almost reached the same level in countries which have newly-constructed renewable energy facilities," he said.

He emphasized that dynamic and stable markets require different approaches when it comes to renewable investments. He gave theexample of China and India, which in spite of their significant contribution to renewable energy market and developments have a problem with the integration of electricity generated by renewables into their grid systems.

"A better modelto transfer electricity to the gridis a must for growing economies," he added.

Frankl underlined the difference incountries which are planning to generate electricity more from renewables and said theOrganization for Economic Co-operation and Development,OECD,countries and non-member countries have different policies and associated risks due to these policies.

OECDmember states planto increase the share of renewables in the following years while non-member states fall behind these aims. Energy supply security, financial problems in boosting renewable investments as well as obstacles in the management of the grid systems have to be overcome before non OECD countries can progress towards this goal of increasing renewables share.

- Decarbonization successful with renewable investment in EU

Franklsaid new decisions taken under the framework of the EU energy policy showed that decarbonization attempts were successfully managed with the help of renewable investments. Moreover, he added domestic natural gas production decreased withelectricity productionthrough renewables.
