Relations Between Bulgaria and Russia Become Cooler

"Relations between Bulgaria and Russia become cooler, though we had no such goals and intentions.” That is what Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said in an interview for Formula of Power broadcast of Russiya 24 and TASS information agency.

In his words, it is not a coincidence that President Vladimir Putin has made some harsh statements about Bulgaria. "I am sure that he had reasons for that,” Borisov commented. "Bulgaria supported the imposition of sanctions as a loyal member of NATO and EU, but the country is losing a lot because of these restrictive measures. A considerable part of tourism, agriculture and trade is connected with Russia. That is why we sustain big losses,” Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said further.

The Prime Minister commented further that the geopolitical environment now is even more complicated than the situation after the Cold War. "JSC Atomstroyexport Company and Westinghouse Company are both trade companies and there are equal criteria towards them”, the Bulgarian Prime Minister said. The Bulgarian Prime Minister stated that he had evaluated the projects for the construction of Belene NPP and the 7th unit of Kozloduty NPP by the same criteria.

"Atomstroyexport and Westinghouse are trade companies. They are neither Russians, nor Americans, they are trade companies,” Boyko Borisov said.

"Bulgaria’s interest is to negotiate the lowest possible price and to start the construction when there is money. Where can we find 20 billion for the investment? I have considered both projects under the same criteria. We hadn’t funds for either of them. I've been extremely honest to both companies. I give an example of this because we did not have any special treatment to either of the companies," said the Prime Minister.
