One Planet Summit to Boost Climate Action

French President Emmanuel Macron, World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres today will address the ecological emergency for our planet by calling together in Paris international leaders and committed citizens from around the world, according to One Planet Summit. European Commission Vice President for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovičwill also attend the summit.

Macron hopes will give fresh impetus to the fight against global warming, despite US President Donald Trump‘ s rejection of the Paris climate accord.

For two years to the day after the historic Paris Agreement, it is time for concrete action, the summit said, adding that many stakeholders are already taking action: projects illustrating the ongoing transition will be presented. Much remains to be done to achieve our goals: commitments will be made.

The Summit’s three key words — adaptation, mitigation, mobilisation — will be discussed in the afternoon and each promoted by one of the three co-organisers: Guterres, Macron and Kim. The One Planet Summit is an alliance of hundreds of global leaders from all sectors, determined to demonstrate the power of collective action in addressing such a global issue as the fight against climate change. The aim is to find new means of financing the adaptation of our ways of life to inevitable transformations, of further speeding up the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and ensuring climate issues are central to the finance sector.

The consequences of climate change affect everyone, so it is up to each and every stakeholder in society to act. More than 50 speakers: NGOs, entrepreneurs, investors, government members, local stakeholders and scientists will meet to take action around the four round tables of the One Planet Summit morning. The goal is to identify and implement tangible solutions and mobilize public and private funding to enable large-scale deployment – including in the most vulnerable countries.
