OMV is going to start an exploration drilling in Bulgaria next February
in the Bulgarian Black Sea, where it is believed there are large gas and
oil deposits. Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov announced the
news, as cited by Austrian Der Kurier.
The realisation of the project
of the consortium of Austrian oil and gas company OMV, Spain’s Repsol,
and France’s Total has been expected since 2012 but was put aside by the
socialists’ government, Borisov explained.
Extracting gas in the
Black Sea is highly important for OMV as it would decrease its
dependence on reserves in politically risky countries, such as Libya and
Yemen. The company is also interested in natural gas transferring
through Bulgaria and Romania, Bulgartransgaz has recently said. Both
neighbouring countries are to connect their gas systems in Ruse and Giurgiu reports Am Cham Bulgaria.
