Lithuania, Slovenia Agree that Nord Stream 2 Gas Pipeline, Russia Plans to Build, Would Divide Europe

Lithuania and Slovenia agree that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline Russia plans to build would shatter the European Union's unity and distort competition on the European gas market, the Lithuanian President's Office reported LETA/BNS.

"Lithuania and Slovenia agree that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline built through the Baltic Sea would violate the principles of the EU energy union, distort competition and the European gas market and would allow Gazprom destroy EU members states' unity," Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite was quoted as saying in a statement released by her office.

Earlier in the day, the Lithuanian president met with her Slovenian counterpart Borut Pahor. According to the statement, the two countries backed the creation of an EU energy union and the joint interests in ensuring a variety of energy sources.

Russian gas giant Gazprom plans to built the Nord Stream 2 in cooperation with five European countries which all signed a contract last year on the establishment of a joint company New European Pipeline.

The project is valued at EUR 10 billion and would be implemented by 2019.

During their meeting, Grybauskaite and Pahor also discussed prospects for economic cooperation.
