Two highly topical fact sheets have just been uploaded on IENE's website, providing a concise overview on crucial issues concerning the electricity and gas markets in SE Europe
IENE Fact Sheet No. 10, on “Electricity Markets in SE Europe”, refers to the significant challenges faced by the electricity sector in SE Europe on the aftermath of the pandemic crisis, worsened by the geopolitical risks of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Hamas-Israel war. The economic activity limitations and demand uncertainties reflect on regulatory gaps emerging by such abrupt developments combined with the necessities of the ongoing energy transition.
On the other hand, IENE Fact Sheet No. 11, on “Electricity & Gas Market Dynamics in SE Europe”, provides an overview of the current situation of the electricity and gas sectors in the countries of the region in 2023, as the energy system in the entire continent emerged from a period characterised by high prices, geographical upheaval and political intervention. As this IENE Fact Sheet notes, while prices were lower in 2023 than the unprecedented highs of 2022, they remained higher than pre-energy crisis levels, threatening Europe’s competitiveness and social cohesion in all European countries, including SE Europe.
