IENE’s Executive Director Participated in the 6th IICEC International Energy Forum in Istanbul

Following an invitation by Ms. Güler Sabancı, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Sabancı University, and Dr. Fatih Birol, Chief Economist of IEA and Honorary Chairman of the IICEC, the Executive Director of IENE, Mr. Costis Stambolis attended the 6th IICEC International Energy Forum, which took place in Istanbul on May 15, 2015

Following an invitation by Ms. Güler Sabancı, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Sabancı University, and Dr. Fatih Birol, Chief Economist of IEA and Honorary Chairman of the IICEC, the Executive Director of IENE, Mr. Costis Stambolis attended the 6th IICEC International Energy Forum, which took place in Istanbul on May 15, 2015.

IICEC (Istanbul International Centre for Energy and Climate), a future-oriented independent research and policy center designed to conduct objective, high-quality economic and policy studies in energy and climate, organized for the sixth consecutive year its International Energy Forum. The Forum, which, once again, gathered high-level energy executives, government officials, academics and specialists from the global energy sector, this year focused "On the Road to Antalya G-20 Summit: Global Energy Security Today and Tomorrow”.

The Forum opened with introductory remarks by Ms. Güler Sabancı while Dr. Fatih Birol delivered the opening address emphasizing the link between energy demand and gas emissions. Two keynote addresses followed by special adviser to the Prime Minister of Japan Dr. Eiichi Hasegawa and US Counselor to Secretary of DOE, Ms. Melanie Kenderdine.

Moreover, IEA Chief Economist Dr. Fatih Birol moderated the first panel, which included the Ambassador of Hungary to Turkey Mr. Gabor Kiss, US Counselor to the Secretary of Energy Ms. Melanie Kenderdine, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Turkey Dr. Sergiy Korsunskiy and Switzerland’s State Secretary for Energy Dr. Walter Steinmann. The panel’s topic was the expectations of the G-20 governments from the Antalya Summit, to be held on 15-16 November 2015.

The President of the Turkish Industry and Business Association (TUSIAD) Ms. Cansen Başaran Symes was the moderator of the second panel, which included Dr. Johannes Teyssen, Chairman and CEO of EON AG, Mr. John Rice, President & CEO of Global Growth and Operations of GE and Dr. Werner Brinker, CEO of EWE AG. In this session the discussion focused on the expectations of the G-20 regarding the investment environment.

The main message of the 6th IICEC International Energy Forum was that energy security priorities should be discussed at the forthcoming G-20 Antalya Summit with emphasis to be placed on workable proposals to enable access to electricity supply in Sub Saharan Africa, thus curtailing global warming by way of concrete steps, and investment in energy efficiency and RES projects.
