The 26th National Conference “Energy & Development 2022”, once again organized by the Institute of Energy of Southeast Europe (IENE), which will take place on November 22 & 23 in Athens.
The 26th National Conference “Energy & Development 2022”, once again organized by the Institute of Energy of Southeast Europe (IENE), which will take place on November 22 & 23 in Athens, signals a turning point in the energy scene of the country and SE Europe, as it will attract a select group of important personalities from the field of politics and economy, with a wide participation of top executives of major energy companies from Greece and abroad, as well as representatives of the academic community.
The special theme of this year “Energy & Development” by IENE is "Europe Facing Critical Energy Choices", while the Conference aspires to shed light on all aspects of the energy sector in the country and in the wider region. During the conference, a thorough review will be undertaken of all developments in the energy sector of Greece and SE Europe, including proposed solutions for Europe's energy security problem, focusing on natural gas supply, the challenges faced by the unprecedented high energy prices and efforts to decouple from Russian energy imports.
The 26th "Energy & Development" takes place at a particularly critical time, as natural gas flows from Russia to Europe have fallen by more than 80% since 2021, energy prices are caught in a relentless upward spiral, threatening to trigger uncontrolled inflation and to halt growth in the region's economies that were recovering from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The two-day annual IENE Conference is being held under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and Energy and the Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) and will take place at the Divani Caravel Hotel, in Athens.
The 26th "Energy & Development" will begin with opening remarks by Mr. Costis Stambolis, Chairman and Executive Director of the Institute of Energy of Southeast Europe (IENE) and will continue with addresses by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Kostas Skrekas and the Secretary General of Energy and of Minerals, Ms. Alexandra Sdoukou. This years’ Conference will also be welcomed by Prof. Athanasios Dagoumas, President of the Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) and Mr. Ioannis Yiarentis, Chairman of the Board and CEO of DAPEEP.
An important innovation of this year's Conference is the panel discussion that will be stayed between the Ministers of Energy from several SE European countries including Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania and Italy who earlier will have attended a summit meeting convened in Athens by Greece’s Minister of Environment and Energy Mr. Kostas Skrekas.
As customary, there will a be detailed presentation of the recently published World Energy Outlook 2022 of the IEA, by Dr. Apostolos Petropoulos, a modeler at the International Energy Agency, in Paris.

Other thematic sessions of high interest include "Research and Production of Hydrocarbons", "Energy Efficiency: Buildings, Transport, Industry" and "Energy infrastructure and the strategic role of natural gas and LNG in global and regional energy supply".
Extensive reference will also be made to the Electricity and Natural Gas Markets in Greece and SE Europe, as well as the critical role of New Technologies: Hydrogen, Green Fuels, Biomethane, CCUS.
