The 2nd Cyprus Energy Symposium, focusing on the «The Role of Cyprus in the New Mediterranean Energy Corridor», took place in Nicosia on March 14 and 15, 2013. Attended by more than 150 participants, the Symposium, which was organized by the Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE), in association with the Nicosia-based media company FMW - Financial Media Way, covered the energy policy of Cyprus on natural gas, oil, electricity and renewable energy sources, as well as the country’s prospects following the latest discoveries of hydrocarbons in its Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The Symposium also covered the latest major energy developments in Israel.
The speakers of the 2nd Cyprus Energy Symposium included leaders and representatives of all Cypriot political parties, ministers from the governments of Cyprus and Greece, representatives from public and private companies and organizations from Cyprus, Greece and Israel, as well as academics and professionals from the energy field.
The need for a common energy doctrine between Cyprus and Israel, the public consensus for the construction of a liquefaction terminal in Vassiliko, as well as the unanimous support for further exploiting the hydrocarbons reserves in the Cypriot EEZ were the main messages of the 2nd Cyprus Energy Symposium.
The detailed agenda of the Symposium, which was held under the auspices of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), was the following:
- The new energy strategy of Cyprus within the framework of the 2020 EU targets.
- The outlook for natural gas exploration and production in Cyprus and Israel, the new energy mix and the geopolitical implications for the region
- Natural gas production prospects in the Cyprus – Israel axis and the prospects of exports to Europe and the international markets
- The electricity market in Cyprus and Israel
- RES, co-generation and energy efficiency in Cyprus and Israel
