Following the launch of the revamped and much shortened "Weekly SEE Electricity Market Analysis" last December, IENE had announced plans for the regular publication of a Monthly Review. Preparatory work for the first issue of the "Monthly Review" was completed earlier this month, by the Institute’s Senior Researcher Mr. Alexandros Perellis and the first issue was dispatched to members last Wednesday (17/2).
This new publication
provides readers with an all round picture of the state of electricity markets
in SEE on a monthly basis.
According to February’s Market Overview of
regional electricity markets, spot electricity prices fell in most SEE markets
affected by high Renewables output and hydropower generation. More
specifically, in January 2021, average spot electricity prices receded in all
regional markets, except in Italy and Turkey, where higher overall demand drove
prices higher by 12.36% and 5.73% in comparison to monthly average values for
December 2021, respectively for the two countries. Prices were driven down by
high hydropower yield and increased output of variable renewables in Greece,
Romania and Croatia and to a lesser extent in Bulgaria. Lower electricity
demand drove prices down in Serbia and Hungary. Moreover, the highest month to
month spot electricity price decline was recorded in Greece, where monthly
average spot price receded by 10.88%, down to 52.52 €/MWh, followed by Serbia
and Bulgaria which recorded a price decline of 7.26% and 6.19% respectively.
Monthly average spot prices in SEE varied between 52 and 57 €/MWh with Italy’s
spot prices formed higher at 60.71 €/MWh and Turkey’s lower at 33.05 €/MWh.
