Joint IENE-TEE Workshop Highlighted the Importance of Energy Efficiency in Buildings and Industry

The decisive role of energy efficiency in the new energy landscape was highlighted at the Workshop on “Energy Without Losses: Savings & Sustainability in Buildings and Industry”, organized by IENE, in collaboration with the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE). The speakers of this timely event, which took take place on Friday, April 3, 2026, at TEE’s conference facility in Central Athens, stressed that, in a period of intense geopolitical and economic challenges, energy conservation is the most direct, efficient and sustainable mechanism for reducing energy costs, enhancing competitiveness and achieving national and European climate goals.

During the opening session, introductory comments were contributed by IENE’s Chairman and Executive Director, Mr. Costis Stambolis, as well as by the President of TEE, Mr. Giorgos Stasinos, who welcomed the speakers and the audience to the Chamber. At the event, addresses were delivered by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment & Energy, Ms. Despoina Paliarouta, and by the President and General Manager of the Centre for Renewable Energy Sources and Saving (C.R.E.S.), Mr. Dimitris Kardomateas.

The 2nd Session focused on the importance of energy efficiency in buildings, as well as on developments in energy audits in industry, with references to international, European and Greek experience.

A special Session followed, on European and international experience in energy saving in buildings and industry, with the participation of Ms. Helene Sibileau, Senior Policy Advisor of the Brussels - based Buildings Performance Institute Europe (BPIE), and Dr. Emma Mooney, Energy Analyst of the International Energy Agency (IEA).

In the 4th Session, representatives of state entities, the market and professional bodies examined the role of energy inspections and the need for possible changes. In this context, it was discussed whether the existing energy inspection system meets the new requirements and what institutional or technical adjustments are required.

Another topical Roundtable followed, in which latest developments at the European level were discussed in depth, focusing on the new Directive 2023/1791 on energy efficiency, which places increased obligations on member states and businesses concerning energy audits.

The financial mechanisms of energy efficiency projects were the subject of the 6th Session, which focused on the available national and European tools, the contribution of banks and investment schemes, as well as on good practices from programs that support energy saving investments, both in buildings and in industry, while, at the same time, the need for a stable and predictable financial environment was emphasized.
