IENE’s latest SEE ENERGY BRIEF Market Watch (Issue Nο 431, February 2025) has just been sent to the members of the Institute. This monthly Newsletter has been providing highly topical information on energy development in regional, European and global level to all IENE members for over a decade.
In this latest issue, one can find information on the EU Clean Industrial Deal, which was announced by the European Commission on February 26. This is meant to be a bold business plan to support the competitiveness and resilience of European industry aiming, at the same time, to accelerate decarbonization.
As part of the Clean Industrial Deal the Commission announced an Action Plan with short-term measures to lower energy costs, complete the Energy Union, attract investments and be better prepared for potential energy crises.
This latest SEE ENERGY BRIEF Market Watch also describes the Action Plan, which, as a part of the Clean Industrial Deal, wishes, by using short-term measures, to lower energy costs, complete the Energy Union, attract investments and prepare the EU in a more efficient way for potential energy crises.
There is also a brief account of “Electricity 2025” report by the IEA International Energy Agency (IEA). Among its interesting findings and forecasts, this report predicts a sharp increase in global electricity demand until the end of 2027, and also estimates that there will be a more moderate acceleration rates in Europe, where, however, Turkey accounted for 25% of the increase in 2024.
The issue also provides information on Russian gas supplies via Turkstream Pipeline that reached an all-time peak in January, as well as on an announcement by Eurostat, according to which, in 2023, renewable energy sources accounted for 45.3 % of gross electricity consumption in the EU, a significant 4.1 percentage points (pp) increase from 2022.
Moreover, readers can find a very interesting graph by Eurostat on the increase of nuclear power production in the EU in 2023.
