Greece’s dependence on energy imports has reached a dangerously high level, according to IENE’s annual Report on "The Greek Energy Sector 2024". In fact, according to the Institute of Energy for SE Europe, the country’s energy dependence has accelerated at an alarming rate in recent years, as it went from 70.7% in 2018 to 79, 6% in 2022, and moved even higher in 2023/2024.
The Institute also estimates that total investments in the Greek energy sector will reach 67.5 billion euros by 2030. The Report (which is available here in Greek and will shortly become available in English) was presented on Monday, December 16, 2024, at a special event held under the auspices and with the support of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE – TCG), in downtown Athens.
IENE’s annual Report on "The Greek Energy Sector 2024" is the 4th one published by the Institute (preceded by the ones on 2019, 2020 and 2023), covering the entire spectrum of Greece's energy sector. This annual Report by IENE, was presented by its contributors, while there were also interventions by senior energy market executives.
The 1st session of the event, which took place at the TEE -TCG Auditorium, began with introductory remarks by the Deputy Chairman of IENE and Chairman of the Geopolitics Committee of the Institute, Mr. Christos Dimas. A detailed presentation by the Chairman and Executive Director of IENE, Costis Stambolis, followed and included the main findings of IENE’s Report. Mr. Costas Theophylaktos, Secretary-General and Chairman of the Scientific Committee for Energy Efficiency of the Institute, then focused on the current developments and trends in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, whereas Mr. Yannis Grigoriou, Vice-President of the Continental Europe Energy Council and Partner of IENE, referred to the prospects for hydrocarbon exploration.
During the 2nd session, which was moderated by Mr. Nicholas Sofianos, an IENE Partner and Chairman of IENES’s RES Committee, important players of Greece’s energy market outlined some of its basic challenges and prospects. Namely, Mr. Andreas Petropouleas, Director of Energy Management at ELPEDISON and Chairman of IENE’s Scientific Committee for Electricity, Dr. Nikolaos Liapis, Chairman of IENE’s Downstream Committee, and Dr. Nikolaos Koukouzas, Director of Research at the National Center for Research and Technological Development (EKETA) and Visiting Research Fellow of the Institute, touched upon the crucial challenges faced by the domestic energy sector as well as the main opportunities for further development.
A lively discussion followed among the speakers and questions raised by the participants of the event were answered.
Finally, it should be noted that the preparation of the IENE Report was mainly funded by the Institute's own resources, while the entire effort was supported by Ensco and KG Law Firm, two of the Institute's corporate members and long-time supporters.
