“IENE News” Latest Issue Highlights Institute's Activities Over the Last 6 Months

The latest issue of “IENE News” (Νο. 12 – see here) has just benn published and sent to all members and associates of the Institute. This ssue, dedicated to the 20th Anniversary of the Institute of Energy of South-East Europe (IENE), covers the events that have taken since Autumn – Winter 2023 up to the IENE events that have occurred or are scheduled for Spring-Summer 2024

The latest issue of “IENE News” (Νο. 12 – see here) has just benn published and sent to all members and associates of the Institute. This ssue, dedicated to the 20th Anniversary of the Institute of Energy of South-East Europe (IENE), covers the events that have taken since Autumn – Winter 2023 up to the IENE events that have occurred or are scheduled for Spring-Summer 2024.

As stressed in the editorial of the issue, in 2023, the IENE celebrated 20 years of continuous operation and contribution to the energy community in South East Europe. Since its establishment in 2003, the Institute of Energy of South-East Europe has carried out a vast amount of work and a great number of projects, covering the entire energy spectrum. During all these years the Institute has managed to play a pivotal role in disseminating information and advancing a better understanding of the energy sector across SE Europe.

Especially over the last three years, IENE has expanded and strengthened considerably its network of partners to include representatives from all countries in Southeast Europe, encompassing the Western Balkans, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Cyprus, and Israel. Currently, IENE is proud to have built a network of 42 partners, with 15 originating from countries within the region and the rest from Greece, which is the country of origin of the Institute.

Thus, this “IENE News” issue makes special reference to the special celebration of IENE's 20-year anniversary that took place on November 14, as part of the 27th ‘Energy and Development’ National Conference. The “Energy & Development 2023” Conference was held in Athens on November 14/15, 2023 and No 12 of “IENE News” includes a special reference on the Conclusions of this major annual event of the Institute.

The issue also reports on the highly successful Webinar on energy security in SE Europe and the East Mediterranean that IENE held in Athens on December 19, 2023, as well as on the Joint Event with the the Athens Bar Association (DSA), on the Role of the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ), which took place on January 29, 2024, at the National Research Foundation (NRF) in Athens.

Decarbonisation policies in SE Europe, in the light of both climate change and the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, was the focus of the joint IENE – ROEC event, entitled “Decarbonization Policies in South East Europe-Between Climate Change and War”, that took place on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, in the Romanian capital, Bucharest.

”IENE honored four personalities from Greece’s Energy Sector with the prestigious “PROMETHEUS 2024” Awards. Information on the special ceremony, held on January 24, 2024, as well as on the detailed Cvs of the recepients of these annual IENE awards, can be found on the current issue of “IENE News”.

This latest issue of “IENE News” reports also, among other activities, to the presentation of the Institute's pioneering study concerning the prospects for carbon capture, storage, and utilization technologies (CCUS) in Greece and Southeast Europe, before the Special Permanent Committee on Environmental Protection of the Hellenic Parliament, on Wednesday, November 22, 2023. The issue also includes a short report on the nomination of IENE’s Chairman, Mr. Costis Stambolis, by the Academy of Athens, to participate in the Working Group of the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) on Energy Security.

This latest “IENE News Issue” provides information on several of the recent publications and journals of the Institute as well as of some of its latest or upcoming regional events. The “15th South East Europe Energy Dialogue”, IENE's major annual international event and also one of the most influential conferences on the regional energy sector, is scheduled to take plave in Thessaloniki, on 19-20 June, 2024.

IENE recently (April 25, 2024), organized the 1st Greek-Turkish Energy Forum, that was held in Istanbul, Turkey, with the support of the Istanbul Energy Exchange (EPİAŞ), Greece’s National Natural Gas System Operator (DESFA) and Greece’s export promotion agency, “Enterprise Greece”.
