This year IENE has joined forces with the University of Piraeus, which runs a postgraduate course on international relations focusing on energy and shipping.
The organizers maintain a strong interest on energy and shipping since a large segment of international maritime transport activity is dedicated to the transport of energy products, such as crude oil and oil products, liquefied natural gas (LNG), special freight (LPG), traditional hard coal iron ore, as well as more sophisticated materials such as enriched uranium. It is true that, without maritime transportation of oil and other energy products on the scale that this is being carried out today, it would be impossible for industrialized countries' economies to function. Hence, the role of maritime transport is of vital importance for most countries' energy sufficiency and, by extension, to the world economy.
Given that a significant share of maritime transport worldwide is controlled by Greek companies or belonging to Greek interests, Greece’s concern for energy market development and issues related to the safety of freighting of energy resources by sea is more than justified. A large percentage of crude oil and its derivatives, of coal and other energy products is carried by Greek-owned vessels, while Greek ship owners participate, increasingly and more actively, in the transportation of specialized energy cargoes (LNG, LPG).
The particularly important role played by the Greek merchant fleet in global energy transportation has prompted IENE to organise for the third time this special event in collaboration this time with the University of Piraeus and a number of ship operators and energy traders. The subjects to be covered in this international seminar include the following:
- Transportation of crude oil and petroleum derivatives
- Special cargoes (LNG, LPG) and coal
- Energy security and the marine environment
- Alternative routes for the transportation of oil and gas
- Legal issues related to energy cargoes
- Energy transport finances
- Foreign policy and maritime transport
- Chartering and vetting of oil cargoes
- Insurance of energy cargoes
- Safety and operational requirements
- Special energy vessels (i.e. Drilling ships, Floating LNG terminals)
A number of prominent speakers from the oil and gas sector, from the shipping sector, international and business studies and maritime law from Greece and abroad will participate in this unique gathering.
The seminar is a non fee paying event open to participation by all IENE members and to the staff and students of the University of Piraeus.
