Green liquid fuels and energy transition

Green liquid fuels and energy transition

The role of green liquid fuels in the energy transition, especially in relation to the European targets for zero carbon emissions by 2050, their paramount importance for the decarbonisation of industry and transport and the challenges that arise will be at the center of the two-day online conference entitled "Green Liquid Fuels of the Future", organised by the Institute of Energy for South-East Europe (IENE) on 11 and 12 February 2021.

The conference will be attended by top representatives from the Energy, Industry and Transport sectors, as well as the political leadership. The event will be addressed by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Konstantinos Skrekas. The President of the Technical Chamber of Greece, George Stasinos, will also address the conference, the key speakers of which include, among others, Dr. George Kremlis, Advisor to the Prime Minister of Greece.

As we move towards a climate neutral economy with profound long-term impact on resources and society, the role of hydrocarbons in the decarbonisation of the hard to abate sectors is usually overlooked in the public dialogue. In the meantime, the Transport sector, which is responsible for the bulk of liquid fuel consumption, being now required to cut down around 90% of its emissions by 2050, is in urgent need for a broad range of low-carbon solutions that cover all forms of transport.

At the same time, the total final energy consumption of Greece relies almost by 54% on oil, 50% of which corresponds to Transport (2019 data), while the four refineries that operate to supply the entire domestic market export about 60 % of their production in neighbouring and other countries. As a result, industry and fuel trading companies are shaping their energy transition strategies by examining alternatives for the future. The range of options for the production of liquid fuels is wide and includes low-carbon raw materials, such as advanced biofuels, biomass, fuels from waste and plastics as well as synthetic fuels from green hydrogen.

In this context, well-known experts, industry leaders, representatives of the Greek political leadership and senior European Commission officials in the field of energy and transport will discuss innovations, different uses, and the future of green liquid fuels. The distinguished speakers will present the current framework and the existing needs, the vision behind the green liquid fuels and the strategy followed in each branch and field, while they will also present a series of innovative projects that have already been announced. The speakers' interventions will address a wide range of needs arising for fuels throughout the transport sector and will also consider alternative applications in the wider energy sector.

The topics to be discussed at the conference are summarized as follows:

  • "Green Deal: Decarbonization by 2050 and the key role of liquid fuels”
  • "The Transformation of the Industry and its Vision 2050”
  • "Road transport: The challenges of new technologies”
  • "The future of Aviation and Shipping Fuels”

Several leading energy companies and organizations have already confirmed their participation in the Conference including ExxonMobil, BP, Repsol, OMV, NESTE, Hellenic Petroleum, Motor Oil, ELINOIL, Aegean Airlines and Fuels Europe the leading industry body.
