The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) granted a license for the Russian design and construction of the Rooppur nuclear power plant's (NPP) second unit to the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC), Russian nuclear company, Rosatom announced on Monday.

The license allows the commencement of construction for the second power unit. Rosatom's subsidiary, ASE Engineering Company, as the General Contractor of the NPP, will perform all build obligations for the second unit.

Currently, the construction of the first power unit is under way, and "in July 2018 we plan to start pouring the first concrete into the slab of the reactor compartment of power unit 2," head of the Engineering Design of ROSATOM Valery Limarenko was quoted as saying.

The construction of the Rooppur NPP Unit 1, located 160 kilometers away in the west of Dhakka, the capital of Bangladesh, started in November 2017.
