Gas Flow from Iran to Turkey Drops

Natural gas flows from Iran to Turkey dropped suddenly on Nov. 22 at 18.00 local time, according to Turkey's BOTAS Pipeline Corporation's Saturday announcement.

Iran's national natural gas company NIGC sent BOTAS a fax on Tuesday explaining that there was a technical malfunction at the Mergenler Compressor Station.

The fault would be solved within 72 hours and after the 72 hour time period all deliveries would go back to normal under the contract, the fax read according to BOTAS.

Flows dropped to a tenth of usual contracted amounts, BOTAS said.

BOTAS announced that 72 hours has passed and natural gas flow is not back to normal levels.

Turkey imported 518 million cubic meters of natural gas from Iran in September.

"This is interpreted as Iran not honoring its contractual obligations during the winter months, just like in previous years," BOTAS said in an announcement.

Iran's NIGC was asked in writing to follow contractual obligations of natural gas trade.

The disruption of gas form Iran caused supply deficit and is being met via LNG terminals, underground storage facility and other sources, BOTAS said.
