Kosovo’s energy corporation (KEK) said it has opened a pre-qualification tender worth 137.34 million euro ($143.3 million) for the rehabilitation and modernisation of Unit A3 of the Kosovo A thermal power plant (TPP).
The rehabilitation and modernisation of the Unit A3 will extend its life by 20 years, increase its capacity to 215 MW from approximately 120–140 MW, and raise operating hours to 7,700 hours per year from about 5,400 hours per year, KEK said in a presentation posted on its Facebook profile last week.
The works on the Unit A3 should be completed within a period of two years after signing the contract.
Interested parties may submit bids during the pre-qualification phase of the tender until March 3.
The project will improve environmental efficiency by using nearly 30% less coal and reducing emissions of dust, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide by over 50% with modern technology and standards, the office of Kosovo's prime minister, Albin Kurti, said in a statement last week.
KEK operates two thermal power plants, Kosovo A and Kosovo B, with a combined maximum net capacity of 840 MW. Unit A3 of the Kosovo A TPP produced 650,000 MWh of electricity in 2024, slightly down from 680,000 MWh in 2023, KEK said in the presentation. The unit currently accounts for approximately 15% of KEK's total annual electricity production.
