Italian Enel secured Chile's biggest renewable energy supply contract by agreeing to provide up to 3 terawatt-hours of electricity per year to mining company AngloAmerican over a 10-year period, Enel said on Tuesday.
The company's subsidiary Enel Generacion Chile will supply the electricity from 2021 when the agreement will take effect. The renewable energy will help AngloAmerican reduce its total carbon emissions in Chile by over 70%, Enel said.
Enel is Chile’s largest power company by installed capacity with around 7,500 megawatts (MW), out of which 4,700 MW of renewables is composed of more than 3,500 MW of hydro, over 600 MW of wind, around 500 MW of solar and about 40 MW of geothermal. Last year, Enel sold 23.2 terawatt-hours of electricity in Chile.
