Enel Reaches Record Renewable Capacity Addition in '16

Italian renewable energy company Enel Green Power made a record high capacity addition in 2016 of 2,018 megawatts, the company announced on Wednesday.

Capacity more than doubled from 900 megawatts in 2015, the company said.

Power plants completed in 2016 include, Apiacas Hydropower Park in Brazil with 102 megawatts, a total of 542 megawatts in solar and wind projects in Chile and 229 megawatts of wind farms in Mexico.

Additional solar and wind capacity in South Africa totaled 470 megawatts and 473 megawatts worth of wind power in the U.S. was put online in 2016.

"The renewables capacity that entered into service in 2016 will allow Enel to avoid the emission of around 4.1 million tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere each year and will be able to satisfy the annual energy needs of around 1.8 million households," Enel said.

The company is planning to focus on the U.S. and Brazil in 2017.

In Brazil, Enel is building the Ituverava solar photovoltaic plant, a major facility with a capacity of 254 megawatts, due to enter into service in the first half of 2017 and the 292 megawatt Nova Olinda photovoltaic plant, which will be the largest solar park ever built by Enel, which is under construction, the company said.
