The world-renowned Hollywood actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio promoted solar energy on his Instagram account as a solution for making electricity more accessible in remote regions.
DiCaprio shared the photo of the United Nations Foundation showing a Tanzanian Maasai family located a few kilometers in the bush from Terraat, the Simanjiro region of Tanzania using solar panels to access electricity.
"Since the national grid can't reach these villages, electricity is supplied by a PV panel and mobile solar system, which charges three mobile phones, two radios and one rechargeable torch. The phones allow the family to stay in contact as they search for places to graze their cattle," he said.
DiCaprio shared that globally nearly one billion people still lack access to electricity. "Off-grid solar energy systems like this one play a crucial role in improving lives while helping to reduce carbon emissions that cause climate change," he affirmed.
DiCaprio established The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF) in 1998 whose mission is "to support projects around the world that build climate resiliency, protect vulnerable wildlife, and restore balance to threatened ecosystems and communities," the foundation's website reads.
The LDF supports projects globally that tries to save vulnerable wildlife from extinction and offers solutions to ensure the long-term health and wellbeing of all Earth’s inhabitants. The foundation has funded more than 200 projects in 50 countries and in five oceans.
According to the foundation, in acknowledgement of LDF’s impactful work over the last two decades, DiCaprio was designated as the United Nations Messenger of Peace for Climate Change and received the 2014 Clinton Global Citizen Award.
In addition to founding LDF, DiCaprio also serves on the board of several environmental organizations; World Wildlife Fund, Natural Resources Defense Council, National Geographic’s Pristine Seas, Oceans 5, and the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
