The Background Paper of the 27th National Energy Conference "Energy and Development", which will be held on 14 & 15 November 2023, at the Divani Caravel Hotel in Athens, is now available on IENE’s website (see here). This comprehensive document provides an inclusive standpoint on Europe’s key energy issues, with a special reference to SE Europe, focusing on current issues and the challenges ahead.

The Background Paper, prepared by IENE’s Research Team, describes “the big picture” of the energy sector in Europe and SE Europe, comprising the core 15 countries of the region as well as the peripheral ones, as defined by IENE in its flagship study, the “SEE Energy Outlook 2021/2022”.

The Background Paper aspires to brief the participants of this major conference on the key energy issues which have emerged over the last few months. Inevitably, these issues focus on Europe and the surrounding region as this is where momentous events have been taking place, such as the war in Ukraine and the latest conflict between Israel and Hamas. It goes without saying that such events are directly or indirectly impacting energy supply and transmission and as a result are helping foster a new sense of energy security. An effort has been made to account and analyse these energy issues and latest developments from a SE European perspective.

The Conference is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Ministry of Development, the Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy and Water and the International Energy Agency (IEA). The Conference is backed by several prominent energy companies and industries from Greece and SEE, along with the support of influential media outlets committed to promoting its objectives.

The Strategic Sponsor of the 27th National Energy Conference is the Motor Oil group of companies, while sponsors include Helleniq Energy, Elpedison and TERNA Energy. Supporters of the event are Energean, the Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator S.A. (DESFA), the Mytilineos Group, DEPA Commercial S.A., the law firms KG Law Firm and Tzanini and Associates, Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) and EnSCo. Task Supporters of the Conference are the Copelouzos Group and Cenergy Holdings. Media Sponsors are the energy portal Energia.gr, NE Global, EnergyPress, allazorevma.gr, Foreign Affairs - Hellenic Edition, the Naftemporiki newspaper, naftemporiki.gr and Naftemporiki TV.
