On the occasion of the forthcoming joint IENE/ROEC conference on, “Decarbonization Policies in SE Europe- Between climate change and war”, details of which you may find here, the Institute of Energy SE Europe (IENE) has prepared a background paper which sheds light on the issues to be discussed at the conference. The paper covers more or less most of the subject areas which will be debated in this unique one-day colloquium which will take place in the premises of the EU representation office in Bucharest.
As a start the Background Paper discusses the region’s inflexible energy mix before it moves to analyze the key elements and challenges of decarbonization policies in the SE Europe region. Then an analysis follows on the role of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) as a key supply source and its energy security dimension. The role of nuclear power, as an emission free energy source capable of providing reliable base load, is also analyzed. The emergence of energy efficiency as a champion energy source is fully discussed together with the broader concerns over energy security in the region.
