"East Mediterranean: The new natural gas frontier" is the title of the one day conference organized by UK' s Energy Institute, in partnership with IENE. This one day conference will take place in London on October 7 and brings together a select group of highly respected authoritiesfrom the East Med but also from well known companies and organizations involved with oil and gas exploration and production in the region.
Following the discoveries of major gas fields such as the Leviathan and Tamar in Israel, the Zohr in Egypt and the Aphrodite and Glafkos in Cyprus, the East Med has become a hot bed for hydrocarbon exploration and production activity. Today, most oil majors are active in the region, including BP, ENI, ExxonMobil, Total and Shell.
Egypt, which is at the forefront of East Med gas exploration and production, has turned the corner from importing to exporting LNG. Israel is already producing substantial quantities and the giant Leviathan field is about to come on stream, while Cyprus is continuing with its extensive exploration programme. Lebanon has also started exploration and is embarking on a new licensing round. Greece which made a comeback to hydrocarbon exploration only five years ago is now pursuing an extensive programme with eleven concession areas having attracted major international players.
The primary aim of the EI/IENE London conference is to chart progress so far in the broader East Med hydrocarbon sector but also discuss key issues pertaining to geology, reservoir characteristics, production and transportation of gas, geopolitics and the impact on the economies of the countries involved. A group of distinguished speakers from most countries of the region but also from international oil companies and organizations have confirmed their participation and will assemble at the EI next Monday in what promises to be a unique gathering.
The conference will be chaired by IENE's chairman and executive director, Costis Stambolis while keynote speakers include Matthaios Rigas, CEO of Energean, Mona Sukkarieh from Middle East Strategic Perspectives, Dr. Charles Ellinas, from eCNHC, Dr. Yiannis Bassias, CEO of Hellenic Hydrocarbon Resources Management, Demetrius Fessas, Acting General Manager of the Cyprus Hydrocarbon Company, George Zafiropoulos, Senior Advisor at Hellenic Petroleum, Dr.Libor Krkoska from EBRD, Dr.Mark Hamilton, Senior Geoscientist at PGS, Gina Cohen, Lecturer at Technion University, Israel, Prof. Jonathan Stern, Distinguished Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, Max Vauthier, Managing Director of LNG value and others.
The topics to be covered in this highly topical event include the transformation of the offshore East Mediterranean into an energy exporting hotspot, insights into Egypt's and Israel's gas fields, the challenges faced by Cyprus as it pursues its extensive exploration programme, Lebanon's next exploration phase, Greece's exploration and production activities, the geology of the Eastern Mediterranean basin as an emerging major petroleum and gas province, gas exporting options such as the construction of a new liquefaction in Cyprus and the East Med pipeline, the EMG pipeline and Israel and Egypt's natural gas export deal and the prospects for establishing a regional gas trading hub.
