The Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) in partnership with SEA Consulting is organizing the 3rd Tirana Energy Forum on Thursday May 30, 2024, in order to examine and discuss current aspects of Albania’s energy sector but also explore its growth potential, including the furthering of cooperation with neighboring countries.
The Forum will undertake a broader review of energy policies currently pursued in the West Balkans and Albania in particular. At the same time, the Forum will seek to explore the full range of energy resources currently being utilized by Albania and the transformation of the power system infrastructure, while it will try to map out the challenges and prospects ahead.
Energy efficiency and cogeneration will be analyzed especially due to their growing importance in buildings and industry, in the context of demand side management policies. The rapid increase of Renewable Energy Sources is associated with the need for additional balancing capacities where power generation by natural gas can play an important role. Furthermore, the crucial role of base load will be analyzed for the operation of the region’s electricity systems, including Albania, which plays a pivotal role thanks to its huge hydro potential. The prospects of natural gas imports and the key role of natural gas for power generation will be discussed.
In addition, the launch of the Albanian Power Exchange (ALPEX), and its progress to date, and the market coupling with Kosovo will be examined in conjunction with the increasingly important role of renewables (especially photovoltaics) in the country’s energy system.
Another important part of Albania’s energy system is it’s considerable hydrocarbon exploration and production potential which will be discussed at length in the context of current and planned investments and the important contribution to the finances of the country resulting from crude oil exports.
The 1st Session of this year's Forum, which will commence with opening remarks by the organisers, will provide an overview of the SEE Energy Sector and the important role that Albania plays, as well as of the key challenges the country is facing, concerning its overall energy outlook.
Albania's electricity infrastructure will be the focus of the Forum’s 2nd Session. Experts from KESH, the country's Power Corporation, OST Sh. A. (Transmission System Operator of Albania) and Greece's Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) are included in the confirmed speakers. In the 3rd Session, on electricity market regulation and operation, energy experts and institutions, as the Albanian Energy Regulatory Entity (ERE), the Albanian Power Exchange (ALPEX) and PPC Albania Sh.A., are to be represented at the highest level.
Hydrocarbon exploration and production and the domestic oil market and natural gas, will be the topics of the 4th Session, which are to be covered by executives of energy firms with a distinguished role in the respective sectors in Albania, such as Bankers Petroleum Albania Ltd, Delvina Gas Company Ltd. and ANIO OIL, as well as of the country's Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy.
In the 5th Session, on energy efficiency and RES, the floor will be taken by acclaimed experts from both Greece and Albania. The 3rd Tirana Energy Forum will conclude with a special session focusing on renewable energy sources with speakers from associations and firms active in the sector. The 3rd Tirana Energy Forum will end with the concluding remarks by the organisers.
Speakers and panelists in the 3rd Tirana Energy Forum will come from all major Albanian energy companies and institutions, but also from regional bodies such as IENE.
The one-day event will take place at the Tirana International Hotel and is supported by major energy companies from Albania and Greece. The Hellenic Business Association of Albania (HBAA) and the Polytechnic University of Tirana are Strategic Partners of the 3rd Tirana Energy Forum, while the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) of Greece, KG Law Firm and the EnSCo energy company participate as Supporters.
