The important role of the energy sector for Greece’s economy and development and its wider impact for South Eeast Europe, will be highlighted once again in the 25th Annual National Conference "Energy and Development", organized by the Institute of Energy for South-East Europe (IENE) on 1-2 December 2021 in Athens. The Conference, which celebrates 25 years of continuous organization, is convened under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and Energy and this year will be held in hybrid form at the Divani Caravel Hotel, in Athens

The purpose of the Conference is to constitute, for yet another year, a platform for fruitful dialogue and reflection on the latest developments in the energy and the environment sector in Greece and the wider region. Participants will have the opportunity to be informed about the prevailing trends and prospects through well documented presentations, lively debates, interventions by industry leaders and hence be able to draw useful conclusions.

Traditionally, "Energy and Development" covers a wide range of topics in the fields of energy, economy, environment, technology and geopolitics. The special theme of this year’s conference is «Energy Transition and the Need for Achievable Solutions – Global and Regional Parameters», as it wants to underline the serious difficulties involved in the energy transition phase and the need to employ cost-effective solutions based on proven and commercially available technologies. At the same time, there will be an overview of the technologies under development and which are of interest for large-scale application in the future.

Putting the global energy landscape under the microscope, the need for energy transition has taken a new dimension, in a generic effort to deal with the Climate Change. Today the global energy environment is changing radically, as the way to de-carbonization is constantly gaining more ground while further efforts are needed to adapt energy markets, diversify the energy mix and for consumers to accept the new reality.

In an ever-evolving economic and political environment, with new technologies and geopolitical parameters playing a key role, new challenges arise but also new opportunities emerge. Therefore, the question which is often asked and will be examined in depth in the upcoming IENE conference is the search for ways to create a friendly investment environment for companies and organizations, while meeting the requirements of the new strategic planning required to achieve national and European objectives, where energy security and the transformation of the energy sector (eg introduction of digital technology, new market structure, target model, reduction of CO2 emissions, etc.) emerge as dominant themes.

More than 70 distinguished speakers will take part in the conference coming from Greece and from abroad, from government and political parties, from academia, from international organizations and companies, while important interventions are expected to be made by renowned experts and reputable analysts.

The Conference is sponsored by Hellenic Petroleum (ELPE), the Energy Exchange Group (EnEx) and KG Law, while supporters include Mytilineos, Motoroil, Sunlight, ENERGEAN, ENSCO, and GreenTop.
