IENE Team Participated in “Political Phenomenon” Conference Convened by the University of Peloponnese IENE, through a small team of energy experts actively participated in the conference on "The Political Phenomenon in Transition” organized by the University of Peloponnese in the seaside town of Loutraki last weekend.

IENE, through a small team of energy experts actively participated in the conference on "The Political Phenomenon in Transition” organized by the University of Peloponnese in the seaside town of Loutraki last weekend.

The 4th Conference on the theme "The Political Phenomenon in Transition: Challenges for Democracy, State and Society" was convened by the Department of Political Science and International Relations of the School of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Peloponnese in cooperation with the Alumni Association of the University and took place at Club Hotel Casino Loutraki conference center, on December 13-15.

The conference focused on the issue of citizens' changing attitudes towards politics, their relationship with traditional parties and their expectations of politics. The main themes of the Conference included current socio-political issues such as elections in Europe, social movements, political violence and terrorism, the Greek party system, Constitutional Review, labor markets in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, societies and states in the era of Artificial Intelligence. EU-US relations before and after the 2019 European elections, state and non-state actors in global society, transformation of sovereignty and human rights, crisis management, traditional and modern forms of power in the international system also formed part of the conference’s main themes. The strategic choices of Greek foreign policy in the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean was another topic which attracted considerable attention and was discussed at length in a separate session which was organized by IENE.

Mr. Christos Dimas, Chairman of IENE’s Geopolitics Committee, chaired the session entitled "The Institutional Dimension of Energy Development in the Eastern Mediterranean" where he analyzed the role of "hydrocarbons and geopolitics in the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus" while IENE’s Chairman Costis Stambolis participated in the same session with a presentation on "Turkey's rising energy needs and their regional impact". Dr. Marika Karayianni, Visiting Researcher at the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of the Peloponnese, and a IENE Research Associate and member of the Institute’s Geopolitics Committee presented her thesis on the "Exploration and Extraction of Hydrocarbons in the Eastern Mediterranean in the light of Turkish aggression".
