The 5th Cyprus Energy Symposium, with the special theme of "Cyprus: Europe’s New Energy Gate”, will take place on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, in Nicosia. The Symposium is being organized by the Athens-based Institute of Energy for South-East Europe (ΙΕΝΕ) and the Nicosia-based fmw financial media way.

The 5th Cyprus Energy Symposium, with the special theme of "Cyprus: Europe’s New Energy Gate”, will take place on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, in Nicosia. The Symposium is being organized by the Athens-based Institute of Energy for South-East Europe (ΙΕΝΕ) and the Nicosia-based fmw financial media way.


The Symposium, which is held under the auspices of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), will cover the latest developments in the energy sector of the country, as well as several aspects of regional cooperation between Cyprus, Greece, Egypt and Israel, vis-à-vis new geopolitical developments and challenges in the Southeastern Mediterranean.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, House President Demetris Syllouris, Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis and his Greek counterpart Giorgos Stathakis are expected to address the Symposium, along with other political figures and senior company executives, businesspeople and academics from Cyprus, Greece and abroad.

Speakers include government officials from Cyprus and other countries, academics and energy company representatives. They will focus in particular on Cyprus’ next steps in hydrocarbon research and development, energy cooperation between countries from the region and company investments in the Southeastern Mediterranean.

Other topics to be discussed at the Symposium will include the design of gas pipelines from the Mediterranean to Europe, the use of natural gas in power generation, RES contribution in Cyprus’ energy mix and the implementation of the relevant legal framework.

The agenda of the Symposium will cover:

  • The energy strategy of the Republic of Cyprus in hydrocarbon research and development.
  • Co-operation in the field of energy among countries of the broader region.
  • Hydrocarbon exploration and production in Cyprus’ EEZ.
  • Investments by energy companies in Southeastern Mediterranean.
  • Energy corridors for exporting electricity and natural gas from the countries of the region.
  • The role of LNG in Cyprus and the East Mediterranean.
  • The exploitation of natural gas for power generation.
  • Latest developments in Renewable Energy Sources and their role in Cyprus’ energy mix.
