IENE Convenes 3rd Tirana Energy Forum as Albania’s Energy Policy Comes into Focus

The Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) in partnership with SEA Consulting is organizing the 3rd Tirana Energy Forum on Thursday May 30, 2024, in order to examine and discuss current aspects of Albania’s energy sector but also explore its growth potential, including the furthering of cooperation with the neighboring countries.

The Forum will undertake a broader review of energy policies currently pursued in the West Balkans and Albania in particular. At the same time, the Forum will seek to explore the full range of energy resources currently being utilized by Albania and the transformation of the power system infrastructure, while it will try to map out the challenges and prospects ahead.

Energy efficiency and cogeneration will be analyzed especially due to their growing importance in buildings and industry, in the context of demand side management policies. The rapid increase of Renewable energy sources (mostly PV and wind) is associated with the need for additional balancing capacities where power generation by natural gas can play an important role.  Furthermore, the crucial role of base load will be analyzed for the operation of the region’s electricity systems, including Albania, with special reference to the introduction of gas. More specifically, the prospects of natural gas imports and the key role of natural gas for power generation will be discussed.

Also, the considerable hydrocarbon exploration and production potential of Albania will be discussed in the context of current production and planned investments and the important contribution to the finances of the country, resulting from crude oil exports.

Finally, the launch of the Albanian Power Exchange (ALPEX), and its progress to date, and the market coupling with Kosovo will be examined in conjunction with the increasingly important role of renewables (especially photovoltaics) in the country’s energy system, which all these years has been covering  its energy needs mainly through hydro.

Speakers and panelists will come from all major Albanian energy companies and institutions, but also from regional bodies such as the Energy Community Secretariat and IENE.

The one-day event will take place at the Tirana International Hotel and is supported by major energy companies from Albania and Greece.
