The Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) has uploaded its latest Fact Sheet, which is available here, focusing on the deployment of renewable energy sources (RES) in SE Europe. As SE Europe doubles down on its efforts to decarbonate power generation, the installed capacity of renewable energy systems in the region has almost doubled during the past decade, with local systems reaching 98.19 GW of installed capacity in 2021, according to latest data provided bu IRENA.
As part of its outreach approach IENE’s senior management will find itself in Tirana, Albania on Tuesday, January 31 for a special event to present the Institute’s flagship report, the “SEE Energy Outlook 2022” which was published last year, to a select audience of energy professionals.

In 2020, IENE introduced its series of Fact Sheets, which aim to present in a comprehensive yet concise manner a broad range of subjects related to the energy sector in SE Europe. In its latest Fact Sheet, which is available here, the Institute focuses on Energy Efficiency (EE) issues in SE Europe. Regarding EE in SE Europe, all states in the region have transposed the related EU legislation (EED and EED recast – Green Deal, etc.).

Undoubtedly, one of the major events in the global environmental and energy scene in 2022 was the COP27 conference, which took place in Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt between November 6 and 18. This was the 27th session of the UN backed Conference of the Parties (COP27) and was hosted by the government of the Arab Republic of Egypt.

Following an invitation by Prof. Ionut Purica Executive Director Advisory Center for Energy and Environment, Romanian Academy , the Chairman of IENE, Mr. Costis Stambolis, discussed the key energy security issues confronting SE Europe in a virtual conference organised by the Italian Association of Energy Economists (IAEE) on December 15, 2022.
As the new year has just started it is worthwhile to look back and reflect on what happened over the last 12 months and what was actually achieved during this time. To start with last year was far more active compared to 2021 when the Covid pandemic reigned supreme and face to face meetings were seriously curtailed.
In December 2022, G7 and the EU countries agreed to set a price cap on Russian oil at $60 per barrel that has now come into force. The price cap applies to seaborne crude oil, petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals which originate in or are exported from Russia. The cap comes on top of the EU import ban on Russian seaborne crude oil and petroleum products, and the corresponding bans of other G7 partners.
The well attended 26th National Conference “Energy & Development 2022” concluded with the annual IENE awards presentation. As the restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic prevented the regular organization of IENE activities, this latest issue catches up the thread from Autumn/Winter 2021, when operations started slowly but steadily getting back to a kind of normalcy
The overview and conclusions of the 26th National Conference “Energy & Development 2022”, convened by the Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) on November 22 and 23 in Athens, have now been uploaded on the special conference microsite. The special theme of this year’s conference was “Europe Αhead of Critical Energy Choices”, where emphasis was given to the current energy crisis and Europe’s effort to decouple from Russian energy while trying to keep in focus its NetZero goals.

As the energy crisis is still unfolding in the European Union (EU), mainly caused by Russia’s suspension of gas supplies and the observed energy shortages at global level, the EU has been eager to diversify its gas imports, as, according to an official statement from the European Commission, “amid Russia’s continued weaponization of its energy supplies, diversification of energy imports is a top priority for the European Union”.
With more than 70 speakers and moderators and 250 delegates in all attending this major IENE event, the 26th “Energy & Development” conference managed to attract strong interest from governments, companies and top experts from Greece and from several countries in the broader region.
