On April 5th, IENE organized a special event in Athens on “Green Financing Opportunities in Greece and SE Europe”. The conference was held in partnership with the Climate Bonds Initiative (CBI) and under the auspices of the British Embassy in Athens.

IENE’s 5th Energy and Geopolitics Forum, which took place on March 21, 2023, at the Divani Caravel Hotel, in Athens, highlighted the various challenges and upheaval brought about by the war in Ukraine in the energy sector, as far as their impact on geopolitics is concerned. Some of Greece’s most distinguished professionals in the fields of energy, international relations and geopolitics as well as politicians and academics, were among the speakers of this important IENE event
IENE has just published a Strategy Report, prepared by the Institute’s Research Unit, which highlights the Electricity Market Reform process now undertaken by the European Commission. The report also discusses the need for decoupling wholesale electricity and natural gas prices following recent interventions by several European governments to impose price ceilings in order to protect consumers from steep rises in electricity bills.

As the Institute is expanding its research remit it is looking to have a full-time «Head of Research» who will undertake to coordinate ongoing work but also invigorate the research capability of the organisation.
A highly relevant Webinar on the dramatic changes brought about by the war in Ukraine on the global energy map and especially in Europe, was organized on Tuesday, March 7, by the Energy Institute of SE Europe. Distinguished energy experts from SE Europe and beyond were the speakers of this online event by IENE, entitled "The Geopolitics of Europe's Energy Crisis"
Following an invitation by the US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and the Croatian Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Davos Filipovic, the Chairman and Executive Director of the Institute participated in the Fourth Ministerial of the Partnership for Transatlantic Energy and Climate Cooperation (P- TECC) which took place in Zagreb,Croatia from March 1-2.
Global energy geopolitics were transformed in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which continue to cause major reverberations this year and beyond notes IENE in its latest Monthly Analysis. In Ukraine itself, an extended conflict looks most likely, but escalation is always looming within the country and in the broader region.
As the repercussions of the recent energy crisis are still being felt across Europe the Institute is going ahead with plans to organise its annual SEE Energy Dialogue which is to be held in Thessaloniki, at the end of May. The town of Thessaloniki, Greece’s northern commercial capital, has been chosen once again for this year’s colloquium as it is located at the commercial and energy crossroads of SE Europe and the East Mediterranean.
As the european energy agenda is becoming more concerned in stepping up decarbonisation efforts, the role of electricity grids and distribution networks in particular moves center stage. Hence the importance of electricity networks in SE Europe was highlighted in the latest Energy Management Institute (EMI) well attended round table which was organised in Sofia, on Thursday, February 23.
In its latest monthly Energy Analysis bulletin for the Greek market, the Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) reported that in January 2023 Greece had zero gas deliveries from Russia, with which, through Gazprom has a number of long term gas supply contracts, independence from Russian natural gas imports in January 2023.
IENE actively participated in the European Commission's Public Consultation on the reform of the EU electricity market design, submitting comments and observations. The Institute welcomes this important initiative by the European Commission, which aims to better protect consumers from excessive price volatility, support their access to secure energy from clean sources and strengthen market resilience.
Following an early start during the pandemic in 2020 and last year’s hybrid event this is the third year running that the “invest in network” is staging this unique conference focusing on renewable energy in the region. The event is being held at the Sheraton hotel in Bucharest and is bringing together both state and private sector companies from Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and Turkey.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the disruptions in global energy supplies that it has fuelled have made governments rethink their energy security strategies, putting a stronger focus on developing more diverse and domestically based supplies. For several governments, nuclear energy is among the options now being examined.
IENE’ flagship study, “SEE Energy Outlook 2022” (“SEEEO 2022”), was successfully presented during a special event which took place at the Polytechnic University of Tirana (UPT) on Tuesday, January 31. A select audience of over 75 people, comprising of energy professionals, academics, senior government officials, diplomats etc. gathered at the capital of Albania to attend this presentation, hosted by UPT and Sea Consulting, a well-known energy consulting firm based in Albania’s capital
The management of IENE had the opportunity to inform its partners, its associates and friends about the planned actions for 2023 during the festive event for the cutting of the New Year's cake organized by the Institute on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at the prestigious Athens Club
