The «3rd Cyprus Energy Symposium», by IENE and FMW, to Focus on the Role of Cyprus in the New European Energy Strategy

The “3rd Cyprus Energy Symposium”, organized by the Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE), in co-operation with the Cyprus-based media company FMW - Financial Media Way, is taking place on March 27 -28, 2014, in Nicosia at the Cyprus Hilton Park. For the 3rd consecutive year, this regional event will gather several energy organisations and companies active in the broader area under the auspices of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI)

IENE Convenes «1st Energy and Geopolitics Roundtable» in Sofia

On March 19, 2014, the “1st IENE Energy and Geopolitics Roundtable” will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria, focusing on the region’s changing geopolitical parameters will include energy experts from Bulgaria and Greece. This Roundtable aims to highlight the key geopolitics issues related to energy in the broader SE European region. This meeting, which coincides with the Greek Presidency of the Council of European Union, will be the first of a series of such meetings to be organized in the different capitals of SE Europe (Sofia, Athens, Ankara, Tel Aviv, Bucharest, Belgrade etc) over the next months

IENE Revised Events Schedule for 2014

According to latest planning by IENE staff, the Institute’s schedule of events for 2014 has been revised to reflect the course of energy developments in the region. An important change is the cancellation of the Gala Dinner to celebrate IENE’s first 10 years which was originally scheduled for March 19, 2014. The 10 years IENE celebration will now take the form of a business luncheon to be held in Athens, on May 8 at the Aegli establishment in Zappeion in downtown Athens. Full details will become available early in March

IENE’s Activities and Structure Presented to SEE Legal Group by the Institute’s Executive Director

Following an invitation by the host of S.E. Europe Legal Group’s annual meeting and IENE’ s Secretary General ,Mr. Gus Papamichalopoulos of the KG Law firm, the Executive Director of IENE , presented an overview of IENE’s activities and organization in a special regional meeting of the Group which was held in Athens on February 15. In his presentation, Costis Stambolis, who is also IENE’s Deputy Chairman, briefed the participants, who between them represented ten of S.E. Europe’s largest and most active law firms, of IENE’s mission and vision citing several examples of the Institute’s research and analysis work as well as its involvement in organizing an ongoing series of energy related conferences and workshops in the different countries of the region

IENE ‘s Chairman John Chadjivassiliadis Participated in the Prague European Energy Forum

Following an invitation by the organizers, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the CzehRepublic, IENE’s chairman John Chadjivassiliadistravelled to Prague and participated in a one-day high level meeting which was held at the Grand Hall of the Czernin Palace on February 13. In line with latest developments and the current agenda of the EU, the Forum’s theme focused on EU’s Energy Priorities in the context of the 2030 framework for climate and energy policies and the implications to the members states. Among the forum’s keynote speakers were Evzen Tosenovsky, MEP Vice of Chair Committee for Industry,Research and Energy (ITRE),Stefan Vergote, Head of Unit, ‘’Strategy and Economic Assessment’’ DG CLIMA,European Commission, Stephen Bennet, Head of EU Climate Mitigation,UK Department for Energy and Climate Change, Ivo Hlavac, Member of the Board, Public Affairs Director,CEZ,a.s. and Mr. Martin Herrmann, Chairman of the Board and CEO, RWE CR,a.s.

Dr. Amit Mor, CEO of Eco Energy in Israel and an Associate Member of IENE, participated in a Round Table Discussion at the Annual Meeting of the Hellenic Institute of Marine Technology (HIMT) in Athens, which took place on November 26-27, 2013, at the Eugenides Foundation in Athens. This year’s HIMT conference was devoted to “Offshore, Shipping and Cruises: Towards a new era in marine technology” and included several distinguished speakers participating from Greece, USA, the UK, Holland, Norway and Israel

IENE’s Monthly Analysis Examines Azerbaijan’s Gas Exports to Europe With Reference to Greece

The Monthly Analysis for January, which forms part of IENE’s South East Europe Energy Brief, and was sent to the Institute’s members and associates last Friday, looks into the role of Greece in Azerbaijan’s plans to promote gas exports to Europe. This 7-page analysis, which includes a series of maps, supports the view that, through its new base in Greece, Socar, Azerbaijan’s state hydrocarbon company, can begin to play a far more influential role than so far appreciated, which will make it part of the European energy scene and further enhance its prospects as a global player

The Recently Announced long Term Assessment for Energy, Transport of GHG Emissions Trends for EU 28 Predicts Decreased Demand Until 2035

In a hefty 161 page publication backed by a vast volume of data from the 28 member countries , the European Commission has just published its 2013 reference scenario for long term energy, transport and GHG emission trends to 2050.This comprehensive report is an update and extension of previous trend scenarios related to energy systems taking into account into transport and GHG emissions developments, such as “European energy and transport-Trends to 2030’’ published in 2003 and its 2005, 2007 and 2009 updates (see here the full document)

The latest issue of IENE’s monthly "SE Europe Market Watch” (no. 117) was sent electronically to all members of the Institute earlier this week. As usual, "Market Watch” reports on latest news and developments on energy in SE European countries and neighbouring regions.

IENE Launches New English Language Web Site

A new web site was launched today by the Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) which uses the well known eu domain designation (tld). This English only web-site, www.iene.eu, is totally different in terms of design and philosophy from the one which has been in use until now.

IENE’s new site contains detailed information on IENE’s mission and objectives, its partners and personnel, its organization and structure, its activities and offered services while at the same time it puts emphasis on current regional and international news

Following an invitation from the Hellenic Institute of Marine Technology (HIMT) IENE’s Executive Director Mr. Costis Stambolis participated in a Round Table Discussion organized as part of HIMT’s annual 2013 conference which took place on November 26-27 at the Eugenides Foundation in Athens. HIMT is considered to be Greece’s foremost Institute on Marine Technology and its leadership includes some of Greece’s top marine engineers and naval architects (see www.elint.org.gr, for further information on the Institute of Marine Technology and its activities)
