IENE participated with two papers in the 3rd conference of the Hellenic Association of Energy Economics (HAEE), on "Energy Transition: European and Global Perspectives", which took place in Athens on 3-5 May
Several new speakers, panelists and moderators have confirmed their participation over the last few daysfor this year’s SE Europe Energy Dialogue. So far, a total of 36 speakers, panelists and moderators will travel to Thessaloniki next month (June 26/27) to take part in this unique event which was first launched in this port city of Northern Greece eleven years ago
Earlier today IENE released its latest “Geopolitics Bulletin” (Issue Nr 12 – April 2018) which was sent to all its members. Prepared by the Institute’s "Energy and Geopolitics” committee which is chaired by oil industry veteran and MoB, Christos Dimas, this “Bulletin” is an occasional publication which attempts to map latest geopolitical developments related to energy while offering some useful insights as to the likely outcome of current crises and threats
A major IENE Study which deals with the prospects for the Electric Vehicle Market in Greece, and SEE and potential business opportunities is approaching completion. This is a new multi-client study project which commenced in November 2017 and is backed by some of Greece’s leading companies including Systems Sunlight, the Mytilineos Group, HEDNO S.A. (Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator S.A.) and the KG Law Firm
In view of the new high targets set by the EU for a 30% improvement in energy efficiency by EE28 by 2030, coupled with a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions at the same time but also taking into consideration the latest important developments following consultations with the European institutions in reviewing the relevant European Directive, IENE has decided to convene a one-day conference in Athens on May 24, in order to review the situation and address key issues
In view of the ongoing developments at European and country level, IENE decided to organize an in-depth discussion on Greece’s electricity market, currently in transition and how this relates to European developments. Hence, on March 28, IENE convened in Athens a special afternoon colloquium, under the title “The Electricity Market in Transition – Latest Developments in Greece and Europe”
Following an invitation by Dr. Katja Yafimava, senior research fellow of OIES, Costis Stambolis, IENE’s Executive Director visited Oxford on March 16 where he conducted a seminar on the key energy transition and energy security issues currently heading SE Europe’s energy agenda
The European Union, through coordinated efforts, has over the last few years been promoting the creation of an integrated electricity market. At the same time, the EU targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions have lead to the radical transformation of the power sector; thus, both electricity markets and networks are in transition
South East Europe’s role in European energy security, market integration and transition was discussed in the light of latest developments in a special evening lecture jointly organized by IENE and the Energy Institute (EI) in London, on March 15
IENE participated in a half-day high-level event, which was held on March 15, in Sofia, as part of Bulgaria’s agenda in its current EU presidency. The event dealt with the important role that Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) play in formulating energy policy. IENE was represented by its Head of Research, Mr. Dimitris Mezartasoglou, who attended this meeting and presented the Institute’s case

On March 5, IENE in co-operation with the Energy &Climate Change Policy Centre (KEPA) of the University of Athens, held an ad hoc Afternoon Colloquium to review latest developments in SE European gas markets and the “Prospects for an Expanded South Corridor”, as a number of major infrastructure projects are currently underway in SE Europe, which will facilitate the introduction and further use of natural gas in this broader geographical area
