Slashing bank lending and reducing funding by regional and global financing institutions to fossil fuel companies, i.e oil, gas and coal, is not a viable option in our effort to satisfy the Paris agreement goals for mitigating Climate Change. Bankrupting fossil fuel companies, as some radical environmentalists seem to suggest, is not a constructive way to address Climate Change challenges.
With forthcoming events in London, Bucharest, Athens and Nicosia and a cramped research and studies programme it seems that IENE has its plate full. But this is not all since in addition to its events and research work the Institute has to take care of the news and analysis updates it regularly sends to its members.
Following an invitation from Greece’s Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE), IENE through its researcher Alexandros Perellis participated actively in the special event, titled "Non-Interconnected Islands and Innovations in the Electric Market", held on Tuesday, September 10, at “Ioannis Vellidis” Congress Centre in Thessaloniki.
A detailed account of the Energy Transition Forum organized by IENE on June 6 and 7 in the Austrian capital has just been released and added to the contents of the event’s microsite. Unlike other events with similar theme and orientation, the focus of IENE’s Vienna Energy Transition Forum was not one sided, as is often the case when the whole discussion ends up being an eulogy for renewables and the need for temperature rise containment to so many degrees.

The Romania Energy Centre (ROEC) and the Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) are joining forces to examine latest developments in European energy policy and regulation and their impact in the South East European region. During a half day conference which will take place in Bucharest on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, key issues concerning global and European Energy Transition, power generation, clean air, transportation and investment in infrastructure and market development will be reviewed.
Under the title "Green finance needs to be more open", a letter which was send to the Financial Times by IENE's chairman Costis Stambolis was published on August 9. Stambolis was responding to an article on Green Bonds by Joshua Kendall which was published in the FT on July 31.
The Institute’s latest “Electric Mobility Update” (Issue No. 4) which was sent to members and associates on August 5, is packed with latest information and analysis concerning the development of the global electric vehicle market and the various sub-sectors involved in this latest chapter of motor vehicle advancement.
Two important Working Papers were uploaded on IENE’s website earlier this week. The first one is WP No. 26 entitled “Natural Gas Import and Export Routes in South-East Europe and Turkey”, and the second one is WP No. 27 entitled “What Kind of Energy Transition? The Case of CE and SE Europe”.
The International Energy Agency’s fourth annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency took place in Dublin, Ireland, on June 24/25, 2019. Following an invitation by IEA’s Executive Director, Dr Fatih Birol, IENE actively participated through Mr Costas Theofylaktos, Chairman of the Institute’s Energy Efficiency Committee.
"Investing in renewable and green energy" was the theme of a major industry conference which was held in Athens on July 15 and was convened by the "A- Energy Investment Initiative", a well known investor activist group. This latest gathering,which focused on " energy storage" and its role in furthering renewables investment in Greece in the mid term, brought together both old and new talent from academia and industry.
Following an invitation by George Papandreou, Greece's ex Prime Minister and founder of the Symi Symposium, the Chairman and Executive Director of IENE Mr. Costis Stambolis participated in this year's event which took place at Milatos, on the island of Crete from 7-11 of July.

On June 5, IENE successfully concluded its latest educational course which dealt with the operation of Greece’s electricity market in anticipation of the new energy market framework both in Europe and Greece and the implementation of the Target Model.
The Vienna Energy Transition Forum, which is organized by IENE in the Austrian capital on June 6/7, has attracted a diverse number of speakers and panelists from all different branches of the European energy sector and engaged them in two days of intense discussions in an effort to broaden the debate of the Energy Transition agenda.
