The new Greek NECP (National Energy and Climate Plan) was officially announced on Thursday 28 November by the Ministry of Environment and Energy and presented on Monday 2 December in a specially convened Colloquium in the Bank of Greece. The NECP that is open for public consultation until December 16 presents ambitious goals concerning RES, decarbonization and energy security.
Last October, SEE Electricity Market Analysis, a weekly newsletter published by IENE, celebrated one year of continuous publication. IENE’s national conference, which has attracted more than sixty speakers and panelists from Greece and abroad, is being held under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and Energy and will take place at the Eugenides Foundation in Athens on November 21-22, 2019.
The final presentation of IENE’s latest study on the “Prospects for the Establishment of Regional Gas Trading Hubs” took place on November 15 at the headquarters of the Central European Gas Hub (CEGH) in Vienna, with the participation of representatives from the energy companies and organizations, which sponsored the study. The study was presented by the two-man study team, which included IENE’s Chairman and Executive Director Mr. Costis Stambolis and IENE’s Head of Research Mr. Dimitris Mezartasoglou.

Following an invitation by Tim Yeo, chairman of the London based New Nuclear Watch Institute (www.newnuclearwatchinstitute.org), the Executive Director of IENE Costis Stambolis participated in what proved to be a high powered gathering convened by the NNWI to examine the role of nuclear energy as part of Europe's energy mix.
On November 6, IENE successfully concluded its second educational course which dealt with the operation of Greece’s electricity market in anticipation of the new energy market framework both in Europe and Greece and the implementation of the Target Model. The course, which focused on the domestic electricity market, was organized successfully with the participation of 27 students, all coming from major energy companies and law firms in Greece.
On October 30 the World Bank organized in Athens a technical meeting to discuss the concept of an alternative energy and energy storage hub for Western Macedonia in Greece. The meeting was convened by the World Bank at expert level as part of its remit of technical assistance to Greece to plan a managed transition out of lignite, financed through the Structural Reform Support Services (SRSS) of the European Commission.

The presentation of IENE’s latest study on “Energy Transition of the Island of Kastellorizo”, which took place in October 24 on Armed Forces Officers’ Club in Athens, to a packed audience, proved to be a major success.
With more than 70 participants and a well-chosen group of 12 high-caliber speakers and panelists, a half-day conference on “Energy Transition in South East Europe - Policy and Investment Challenges”, co-organized by IENE and the Romania Energy Center (ROEC) in Bucharest on October 16, proved to be a big success.
Responding to an invitation by Mr. Derek Michalski, Editor of the “Voice of Renewables” and organizer of the WIND Mission Greece conference, IENE, through it Chairman and Executive Director participated in this timely event. The conference brought together some of Greece’s top experts in wind energy and Renewable Energy Sources (RES) who presented latest a aspects of their work and debated the hot subjects relevant to the Greek RES scene, such as the licensing and regulatory issues involved in the development and implementation of RES projects and wind farms in particular.
With more than 80 participants and 14 eminent speakers the joint Energy Institute – IENE conference, which was held in London, at EI’s premises on October 7, attracted industry wide support and helped focus attention on East Mediterranean’s upcoming role as a major gas exploration and production area. The excellent presentations and high quality of discussions that took place contributed to the event’s success.
Following an invitation from Greece’s Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE), IENE through its researcher Alexandros Perellis participated actively in “3rd European Forum on Clean Energy for Islands”, held on 3 – 4 October, at Rodos Palace Hotel in Rhodes with a presentation on “Islands energy needs and how to guarantee project success”.
As the date gets closer for this joint IENE-ROEC event interest from participants is growing daily. This one half day conference is convened by the Romanian Energy Centre (ROEC) in partnership with IENE and will be held at the EC Representation Office in Bucharest on Wednesday, October 16. This unique event, which is organised under the auspices of the European Commission and sponsored by ENEL Greenpower, will seek to identify and address the huge challenges posed by Energy Transition in the South East European region as pressure builds up for accelerated decarbonisation across Europe.
"East Mediterranean: The new natural gas frontier" is the title of the one day conference organized by UK' s Energy Institute, in partnership with IENE. This one day conference will take place in London on October 7 and brings together a select group of highly respected authorities from the East Med but also from well known companies and organizations involved with oil and gas exploration and production in the region.
