As part of the containment measures announced by the Greek government in order to prevent the further spread of Coronavirus, IENE is obliged to postpone its forthcoming "Energy Efficiency" conference. More specifically, this event, which was scheduled for Friday, March 20, at the Eugenides Foundation in Athens, is postponed for later in the year. Once a new date has been set an announcement will be made to that effect.
A major expansion of the Institute's partnership base was realized in the latest Annual General Meeting (AGM) which took place on February 12 in Athens. Following a proposal tabled by IENE's Executive Committee to the AGM, which met in quorum, the partners present unanimously voted to accept as full partners nine new colleagues from eight different countries in the SE European region. These countries include Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Israel, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Turkey.
In view of EU’ s new higher targets for Energy Efficiency for 2030, and the latest revision of its Energy Efficiency Directive, and given the priority placed by the Greek government on energy efficiency, IENE is organizing an all-day conference in Athens in order to provide a comprehensive overview and assessment of the situation.
Following an invitation by the organisers IENE's Chairman and Executive Director Mr.Costis Stambolis travelled to Vienna earlier this week where he participated in the closed workshop organised by USEA in association with USAID on the region's Electricity Market Initiative (EMI). The above organisations have undertaken a multi- year programme to help enhance the integration and operation of power markets in Southeast Europe.
The fifth annual Chatham House Energy Transitions conference will be held on Monday 23 March 2020 in Chatham House, London. IENE is a Supporting Organisation of this important event and will actively participate in its proceedings. The conference comes at a critical time for climate and energy politics, and will focus on solutions, examining different pathways actors can pursue to effectively channel the transition to deliver a sustainable, secure, affordable and inclusive future energy system.

IENE recently introduced a series of Fact Sheets which aim to present in a comprehensive way a broad range of energy subjects. Two fact sheets have already been prepared and published, the first one on SE Europe’s Gas Market and the second one concerning the region’s LNG Markets. These fact sheets were initially circulated in the joint Eurogas – IENE workshop on SEE Gas Markets, which took place in Brussels on January 22.
On January 30, IENE’s Energy Weekly Report (EWR) celebrated the publication of its 200th issue. EWR was first published on November 23, 2015 and was quickly established as one of the main publications of the Institute. The EWR is released every Thursday, informing IENE members of important developments in the energy sector in the SE Europe region and globally.
Once again a conclave of top level executives from major energy companies and senior industry leaders from Europe, Asia and America gathered in Vienna for the annual European Gas Conference which was held last week (27-29 January) in the Austrian capital.
IENE’s research interest in the energy self-sufficiency of islands, especially the non-interconnected ones, through the introduction of clean energy solutions, has already been demonstrated by its recent study for the “Energy Transition of the Island of Kastellorizo”. The study presents a detailed plan to address the problem of power generation in non-interconnected islands by ensuring high reliability and resilience, while securing energy supply.
Following the two previous successful rounds of the seminar on the "Introduction to Geopolitics and Energy", IENE is going ahead to organize for the 3rd time this educational course in collaboration with the Institute of International Relations (IDIS) of Panteion University.
Eurogas, an association representing the European gas wholesale, retail and distribution sectors towards the EU institutions, and the Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) joined forces and convened a half-day high-level workshop at Eurogas’s offices in Brussels last Wednesday, January 22, in order to discuss latest developments related to “Gas Supply and Competition in SE Europe”.
Last Monday (20/01), in a particular festive atmosphere, IENE’s New Year’s Cake Cutting Event took place at the Divani Caravel Hotel in Athens. More than 80 members and friends of IENE participated in this annual event which is traditionally held in January to celebrate the start of the new year.

As the new year got started we witnessed major developments in two key energy projects in SE Europe. First of all on January 8 we had the official inauguration of Turkish Stream in Istanbul where president Vladimir Putin of Russia and president Tayyep Erdogan of Turkey joined hands in a ceremony marking the start of operation of Turkish Stream.

As the year draws to a close, a small team from IENE's staff has been busy with the preparation of the weekly newsletters, year end review reports, preparatory work for a number of studies, and with high level contacts in Greece and other European countries in an effort to finalize details for the Institute'sactivities programme for 2020.
