Last Sunday (15/11) the East Mediterranean Business Cultural Alliance (EMBCA) organized a virtual discussion on the theme of Hellenic Energy Independence.
IENE’s long established event, the “SE Europe Energy Dialogue”, this year is to be held on December 9 - 10, 2020. The worsening Covid-19 pandemic has necessitated the convening of the conference entirely in virtual format. This will be the 12th edition of the Energy Dialogue which was first launched in 2007 in Thessaloniki and has been held there on numerous occasions.
Last October Brussels based "Energy Charter" published its long awaited Energy Investment Risk Assessment Report (EIRA2020) which has been developed under Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the Energy Charter Conference.
The Institute’s Annual Report for 2019 which also covers activities for the first half of this year, has just been uploaded on IENE’s website.
The Annual Report provides accurate information about the Institute of Energy of South-East Europe (IENE) and its activities and is mainly addressed to its Partners, its members, it’s institutional stake holders as well as to energy professionals, to government agencies and state supervised organizations in SE Europe.
After several years of delays and the repeated postponement of the starting date, the new electricity market, operated by Greece’s Energy Exchange (HEnEx), was launched on November 1, in adherence to EU’s Target Model, while no major issues concerning procedural or technical matters have been reported as yet.

This year, the annual Regional Gas Conference, convened by the Croatian Gas Center, celebrated its Jubilee by organizing from October 21-23 the 35th International Scientific & Expert Meeting of Gas Professionals. The meeting was held virtually on account of the measures of prevention and limitation of the contagion of the coronavirus. IENE participated in the conference by presenting a paper on the “Prospects for the Establishment of Gas Trading Hubs in SE Europe”.
Following the 32nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) which took place on Wednesday, October 21, and was organized online with the presence of almost all partners, IENE now has representation and in all 13 countries that constitute the wider region within which it operates.
Following an invitation by the chairman of Bulgaria's Energy Management Institute (EMI) and IENE partner, Mr. Slavtcho Neykov, the Institute participated in this two day highly topical conference convened by the EMI in Sofia on October 15-16. Although arrangements had been made for IENE's chairman Costis Stambolis to fly to Sofia and actually participate in person, the deepening second wave Covid-19 pandemic forced a change of plans and as a result participation was virtual.
Following two postponements due to the coronavirus pandemic this year's Flame conference,the long established leading European gas event, convened in virtual format from October 12-15. With 273 speakers and panelists and hundreds of attendees this year's event proved highly successful given the adverse circumstances in the economic and business environment in Europe.

At a time when the European Commission is setting new and more ambitious Climate targets, to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent from 1990 levels by 2030, most countries in the SE European area are still debating if and when they should give up coal use for power generation.

The main points and conclusions of a special report prepared by IENE in order to evaluate the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis on Greece’s energy market were presented at an online press conference in Athens on Thursday, September 10.
IENE is going ahead with its plans for a two-day intensive educational seminar on Greece’s New Electricity Market. The seminar is perfectly timed since on September 17 the New Electricity Market is being officially launched by the Hellenic Energy Exchange. In view of latest COVID-19 restrictions the Seminar will be conducted entirely online.
