The decisive role of energy storage in the penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in the electricity grid as well as in the Energy Transition was analyzed by more than 20 speakers from Greece and Europe who participated in the online Workshop on: “The Role of Energy Storage in Advancing Large Scale RES Penetration”, organized by IENE on April 27, 2021 with HUAWEI and SKE as Lead Sponsors.
IENE’s forthcoming online Workshop on Energy Storage, scheduled for April 27, has attracted an enviable number of top experts from across Europe and a large number of participants.
Following the reorganization of the Institute's website (see Announcement of April 6) two separate and timely analyses have been contributed by Visiting Research Fellows of IENE.
As part of its events programme, the Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) is going ahead with its plans to organize an online half-day workshop entitled “The Role of Energy Storage in Advancing Large Scale RES Penetration”, through the Zoom platform on April 27, 2021.
A number of changes have taken place in the organization and content of IENE’s website www.iene.eu, so that users may trace much easier the information they are looking for.
Most of the 16 Chapters of the Institute's major report on SE Europe's energy status, the "SEE Energy Outlook 2020/2021", have now been completed, edited and send for peer review to top experts in various European companies, organisations and academic institutions. Contributions have been received from 25 authors from all different countries In the region.
IENE was confirmed by the Climate Bonds Standard Board as an Approved Verifier under the Climate Bonds Standard. IENE will be expanding its services to industry by providing third-party verification, assessing the credentials of issued green debt under the Climate Bonds Standard.

In its series of “Company Profiles”, the Institute released on March 19 and sent to its members a special report devoted to Hellenic Petroleum (HELPE), one of the biggest companies in Greece and one of the largest vertically integrated energy groups in SE Europe. The company’s principal activities include, among others, hydrocarbon, refining, supply and trading of a broad range of petroleum products, fuel marketing, petrochemicals production and trading, and exploration and production. The Group is also active in power generation and natural gas as well as the implementation of energy projects not only in Greece but increasingly so in the whole SEE region.
The problems, challenges and opportunities that arise for the country and the local communities from decarbonization will be at the heart of a webinar organized by the Institute of Energy for South-East Europe (IENE) on Thursday 18 March 2021 from 15:00 to 19:00.
Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator (DESFA), a long standing corporate member of IENE, has recently taken a final investment decision to build a small-scale jetty at its LNG import terminal located on the island of Revithoussa, boosting bunkering opportunities in the region. The project has a price tag of about 20.4 million euros ($24.6 million) and the Greek gas grid and LNG terminal operator expects to launch the new jetty in September next year, according to its development plan.

On “Energy Efficiency in Buildings and Industry”, one of the EU's key objectives under the European Green Deal, will focus the online training seminar to be held by ΙΕΝΕ from 3 to 31 March 2021. The Seminar will have a total duration of 35 teaching hours, consisting of eleven 3-hour and one 2-hour meetings.
The multiple uses and prospects of green liquid fuels, the challenges that arise as well as the role that green liquid fuels will be called to play in the energy transition - especially in Industry and Transport - were discussed extensively at the two-day online conference "Green Liquid Fuels of the Future”, held by the Institute of Energy for South-East Europe (IENE) on 11 and 12 February 2021, with the Leading Sponsorship of Hellenic Petroleum SA.
Following the launch of the revamped and much shortened "Weekly SEE Electricity Market Analysis" last December, IENE had announced plans for the regular publication of a Monthly Review. Preparatory work for the first issue of the "Monthly Review" was completed earlier this month, by the Institute’s Senior Researcher Mr. Alexandros Perellis and the first issue was dispatched to members last Wednesday (17/2).
